How to clean and prepare a concrete floor for further work, Shot blasting, and more

Simpler and smaller projects such as curbs or hard-to-reach places might make better use of diamond grinding which is a longer process than shot blasting but often leaves a cleaner and smoother surface on hard to get areas such as concrete slabs and uneven floors. First thing is first it is important that the surface is clean.

1. Get some TSP and clean the concrete

If you are in the construction environment you may have heard of trisodium phosphate which is a chemical that excels at cleansing concrete and should be used only by someone who understands its properties.

2.  Remove all the dirt from the area

By removing the dirt you will be free to focus on what matters, which is the smoothness of the floor. Blast cleaning might be a good idea for this step.

3. Use the TSP on the areas and check for remaining compounds

By selecting the right equipment you can aggressively scrub the floor with this chemical, meaning you get rid of all of the dirt.

Ensure during this step at the end you double-check for any compounds left behind such as glue or adhesives. You will need to remove it with a floor scraper or knife.

If you are struggling to remove any compounds try and use a powdered hydrated lime paste, allow it to try for long enough, and then finally scrape the adhesive again.

4. Apply another coating of TSP and finish

Simply scrub the floor a second time with the remaining TSP and finish by rinsing the floor carefully with cold water to ensure there are no compounds left on the surface.
